Abstract
English language evolves and continues to evolve in different areas of language studies for an enhanced understanding. This evolution results to inconsistencies in translation of meaning of words and utterance from Igbo L1 to English, making it impossible for the learner to access English language along side with its corresponding meaning relations in the native language. The work aims at illustrating these English words and combination of words whose meaning explicitly change in translation. The work is guided by the theory of second language acquisition propounded by Noam Chomsky in 1957 and theory of cross cultural communication. The theory of second language acquisition suggests that learners bring their L1 knowledge and experience to the process of learning of L2 while the theory of crosscultural communication propounded by Edwin Hall in 1959, suggests that misunderstanding can occur when people from different cultures interact due to difference in value, belief and communication style. The research design for this work is descriptive and 100 pupils from four (4) primary schools in Mbaitoli, in Imo State were randomly chosen. Twenty five (25) structured questions in Igbo language were given to them to translate into English. Four-point Likert scale was used for data analysis. Inconsistencies in literal translation of Igbo language generate error in semantic and contextual meaning in the study of English. The study recommends collaborative agreement in working out a standardized modality for translation. Again, the linguistic Association of Nigeria (LAN), English language Teachers‟ Association of Nigeria (ELTAN) and Society for Promoting Igbo Language and Culture should agree on acceptable rule for meanings
